I plan to experiment with this shot over the weekend and expand it to achieve a greater sense of scale. The third image is closer to the size I'm aiming for.
For me, image one is actually more obviously 'about' scale - it feels imposing this way, whereas the third image makes the 'tower' seem less authoritative in the image. I very much like your working-up of images, Lewis, but you'll need to ensure that you're getting some detail in there too, something to arrest the eye and give a sense visual priority - and perhaps additional solidity and 'materiality' to your elements; so a sense that they're composed of different stuff, and with different weights, densities and thicknesses.
